Our Brotherhood collaborated with an Orthodox synagogue in hosting a group of Israeli soldiers who had incurred post-combat post-traumatic stress syndrome for a week of programs that included intensive outpatient group therapy, communal Shabbat services, staying at homes in the community, participation in Brotherhood events, touring, and "play" time.
The program brought the community closer to understanding the combat and emotional experiences of Israeli soldiers and brought the two synagogues closer together.
The Peace of Mind Program is about the treatment of emotional and psychologically injured IDF soldiers. The concept is that by bringing small groups of soldiers to Jewish communities in the United States they can find "space" to deal with their emotions in a loving and supportive environment, all while continuing group therapy sessions with their Israeli therapists. Our Brotherhood partnered with Young Israel of Sharon, a Modern Orthodox synagogue in hosting 18 soldiers and 2 therapists for one week during October 2018. The key aspects were as follows;:
1) Raised the funds-$5,000- to underwrite expenses for the soldiers visit.
2) Find host families for the soldiers and therapists for the week
3) Find drivers to take the soldiers to their therapy and activities
4) Have the soldiers attend Shabbat services
5) Create programs that would bring the soldiers and the Jewish community together
6) Publicize the program to the Sharon Jewish community

Results: Our Brotherhood raised/donated $2,500 to underwrite the visit. Some of our members hosted the soldiers in their home. We hosted the soldiers at our Annual Paid Up Brotherhood Supper. Over 110 members attended and had the opportunity to meet with the visiting IDF soldiers and members of the Orthodox community were in attendance as well. Representatives of the soldiers spoke about their combat experiences and the challenges that soldiers face in Israeli society once their active duty is over. The founder of the Peace of Mind program gave an overview of the history and goals of the program.
The soldiers expressed their appreciation of the love they felt from the American Jewish community.

Outcome: Our club was enriched by the experience and it tied us closer to Israel. The week brought the Orthodox and Conservative communities closer together as well. More collaborations are planned for the future between the 2 synagogues.

Self Assessment
Getting to meet with and learn from the Israeli soldiers was a powerful experience. When the soldiers described their experiences and the lead therapist described what the soldiers' psychic trauma felt years after the actual combat was both eye-opening and emotional for our group. We were proud of having raised the money so that the soldiers and therapists could come to Sharon and of having made this experience possible for our community. Approximately 15 people contributed in organizing, hosting, fundraising and preparing for the big event-the Supper with the soldiers. About 110 (out of 150 members) attended the dinner with the soldiers.
FJMC supports the state of Israel and this program is a people-to-people endeavor that tightens bonds between Jewish men and the State. Additionally, by partnering with the local Orthodox synagogue, we were able to build our community by serving a common purpose - helping these soldiers cope with their combat experiences and showing them that they have support of Jews in the United States.
We strongly encourage other clubs to host the Peace of Mind program. Our Brotherhood is available to offer assistance to other clubs as to lessons we learned from our experience.
