For Yom Kippur and Yom Ha Shoah, we offer people the opportunity to sponsor personalized LED memorial candles that are illuminated and displayed when people arrive for the Yom HaShoah program or Kol Nidre. It makes a beautiful focal point an acts as a fund raiser at the same time. We charge $10 for one candle, $18 for two and just $5 each additional candle. Because the are "sponsoring" candles rather than buying, very few take them home, so they are reused.
We offer personalized Yartzeit candles for Yom Kippur and Yom Hashoah. At $10 for one, $18 for two and $5 each additional, it's a very affordable way to memorialize loved ones. It's also in full view and lit when people arrive, so it gets a lot of attention. Because people sponsor candles rather than buying them, very few ask to take them home, so they are reused aver and over, making it an even better fund raiser.
The program is very affordable to get off the ground. Each personalized memorial costs less than $1 to produce. A cost breakdown is attached. Once we have made the investment, after each display the personalized labels are removed, the votive glass wiped down with alcohol to remove adhesive residue and it's ready to use again. After the initial outlay, new labels cost about .06 each to produce. The batteries last up to 100 hours. Ours have been used for 3 Yom Kippur cycles (over 27 hours each time) and 2 Yom Hashoah programs and we have not had to replace any yet. They cost less than .25 each to replace.
We allow one honoree per candle, but each can be honored by more than one person on a candle.
The label says "In Loving Memory of", then the name of the honoree, then "Honored by" and then the names of those honoring his/her memory. Temple Sinai Men's Club Logo is at the bottom.

Self Assessment
This program has gotten a lot of positive attention for our club because it is such a moving and beautiful focal point and tribute when people arrive. It has also been an easy and effective fundraiser, as it requires minimal work and few people to implement;. It can be done by one or two people. Our club has 34 members, in a synagogue with about 170 family units.
I think this involves our club in Jewish life in that Yartzeit and memorializing those of blessed memory is an important and integral part of Jewish life. I believe we are leading the way in this unique and innovative endeavor, and it not only impacts our Jewish community. We actually have non Jewish people sponsoring candles as well, so it reaches beyond our temple walls, thanks to social media.
It's an extremely simple simple program to institute and maintain. Once established, it's almost 100% profit, and once people see it, it builds momentum and grows. People love to look at the different names and study the candles.
