In conjunction with the Vav Hebrew School program, Men's Club assists with the class in making a special talit with tzizit, that the students string themselves. The student picts a fabric of their choice with dimension and holes are places in it with grommets for the tzizit.
Here are the instructions for making a tallit from the Vav program:
Here is more information about the tallit making component of the morning:
. For most of us, creating a tallit is a completely new experience, so here is some information to aide you in picking the right fabric for your child.
o The length of the fabric should cover your child's wingspan (distance from their fingertips on one hand to fingertips on the other hand when their arms are spread out at their sides) and the width should be the distance from their neck to their waist.
o Fabric choice is completely their own, so have fun with it! Patterns, colors, sports emblems, etc. are all fine, just keep in mind that as we want these tallitot to be long-lasting and meaningful, the fabric choice should be something they will be comfortable wearing with pride for years to come, not just within the comfort of our Vav family.
o Fabric should be made of 100% material, i.e., no blends. This is to avoid certain halachic issues. 100% wool, cotton, silk, lace, polyester, etc., are all OK.
o Fabric must be pre-hemmed-if you have access to a sewing machine, you can hem it that way or you can also use iron-on hemming tape, available at most craft stores, for an easy alternative. Alternatively, many dry cleaners or tailors will also hem the fabric to your specifications for a nominal price.
o Fabric must have button-holes (or similar-sized holes) in each corner of the hemmed fabric to allow for the tying of tzitzit.
