Men’s Health Programs

Men are often hesitant to discuss male health issues, this program was designed to specifically be a safe place to hear from a renowned expert on male health issues, with valuable information and handouts provided and questions encouraged.
A two hour presentation (Known as the Shpall Shpiel!) including question and answer on male health issues, specifically with regards to reproductive, cancer, and other items that men normally do not feel comfortable discussing and often ignore.

November , 2018

Gentlemen!

Don’t be a turkey! Men’s club, in honor of MOVEMBER, is having a frank conversation about Men’s Health. Urologist, Andy Shpall will discuss topics we men need to keep abreast of (pun intended). Come, Tuesday night at 7:30pm. Any question, big or small, will anonymously be addressed. Topics to include: prostate cancer, testosterone, ED, urinary infections, and the joy of aging. And as you know, Thanksgiving is over which means it is an excellent time to discuss if pumpkin pie really is an aphrodisiac.

When: Tuesday the 27th
Where: Temple Aliyah, Tidus Hall
Time: 7:30 pm (after Minyan)
Speaker: Andy Shpall, MD, Urologist

Self Assessment
This event was actually, in my never to be humble opinion, quite successful. I say that for a variety of reasons, but the main reason is it was well attended. We had over 30 people attend, and no one left before the program ended. I had also reached out to our neighboring shuls, and several men from other congregations attended as well.
Although we have had a similar event in years past, the attendance was half what this one was - I attribute that to the way we advertised it, making it sound fun and cool rather than square and boring...

In addition, the speaker is also a respected member of our temple board, as well as being a recognized expert in his medical field. Although an uneasy topic for most men to discuss, he immediately put everyone at ease. The conversations were two way and robust, and the handouts were informative...
Good health is important to all of, and one of the Jewish thoughts is a commandment to not hurt your body - and men are notorious for ignoring warning signs and asking for help - so this frankly hits on all three - leadership was involved in getting this idea afloat, and the announcement was deliberately playful and meant to catch the eye. And based upon the attendance, which was open to the community and neighboring shuls, I think the community aspect was met!
If any one has any questions about the program, I am glad to respond. We had some handout materials which can be recreated if anyone is interested.
